Writing an effective Resume


When you are in search of a job, your resume plays an important role in getting you selected for an interview. Always try to keep your resume as short as possible as normally employers take only few seconds to scan through your resume. Your first page should include only the key points relevant to the position you apply for.

The basic resume format mainly represents important things that employers usually look for. Various sections of a resume format include contact information, objective, work history and background, educational qualification, skills and experience, certifications, reference etc. Most important is to write a one-line career objective at the start of your resume. One should put in lot of effort and care while creating a resume.

There are five major sections of each resume:

1. Objective needs to be specific.
2. Professional background should showcase the highlights of your career.
3. Work experience
4. If you don't have any work experience then academic background should be your main focus.
5. References - You can include a professor or your supervisor.

It's very essential to make a good first impression. Therefore you will require professional resume format. Varieties of resume formats are available as different professionals are writing it. There are several websites providing you such formats. The most preferred format is - The chronological format. In this type of format, your experiences are showcased in a chronological order ie. starting from most recent one. Other two formats available are - Functional and Combination resume format.

Choosing a correct resume format is equally important to the contents of your resume. Here I am listing few useful resume formatting tips:

a. Always use standard margins.
b. Always use standard fonts.
c. Always use the bullet formatting.
d. Try not to use graphics or text as bullets.
e. Avoid using logos, graphics or images in resume.
f. Always use alignment and indent features.
